The Lamplighter

The Lamplighter is a 2D puzzle platformer made in the Unity Engine. It follows the eponymous Lamplighter on their journey to either bathe the world in light once more, or leave it in darkness. On this project, I had both design and technological responsibilities: I designed the mechanics, designed and tested the puzzle elements, and coded the entirety of the game.

Achievements

  • Dialogue Choices

The game features fully expandable branching dialogue system that allows the player to decide their eventual fate. I was personally responsible for the creation of all aspects except the dialogue itself.

  • An Eerie Otherworld

The world of the game is bathed in eternal darkness, and things are not quite what they seem. I was responsible for the implementation of the environment as well as the puzzle mechanics and their theming.

My main challenge in this project was my unfamiliarity to working as the only developer. In previous projects, I had always had at least one additional programmer, and while I was decently comfortable with the Unity Engine, I missed having support and a second eye on my code. Eventually I overcame this challenge through an improvement in my communication: whenever I had doubts about some element I was working on, I explained my thought process and the required background in layman’s terms to a member of the team, and I would listen to their feedback. This helped me to not only catch myself before committing design mistakes, but also to integrate a plurality of ideas into the design and make it richer than I ever could on my own.
